About the BHGI
Co-sponsored by the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center and Susan G. Komen for the Cure, the Breast Health Global Initiative (BHGI) is a global public health alliance organized to address the breast health needs for medically underserved women. Globally recognized for the innovation of an evidence-based expert consensus approach to create resource-sensitive guidelines for breast cancer early detection, diagnosis, treatment, and healthcare systems, as related to breast healthcare delivery in low and middle income countries (LMCs), BHGI produces tangible outcomes through collaboration of an extensive international network.
The alliance, comprised of government agencies, organizations, non-governmental organizations, for-profit and non-profit organizations, doctors, scientists, policy makers and advocates involved in breast healthcare and cancer control around the world, serves as a hub for linkages, operating as catalyst for international pilot research, demonstration and education projects with partners and others.
The BHGI is taking an evidence-based approach for translating theory into practice. In its next phase of innovation, BHGI will collaborate with global, regional and local organizations to pioneer the development of Learning Laboratories to define critical in-country methodology for establishing or expanding breast cancer care programs in LMCs. Through implementation science, BHGI will work with international partners to carry what we believe is a clear and compelling vision of global health improvement from theory into practice.
BHGI alliance members collaborate in BHGI programs by sharing resources, knowledge and expertise. For more information on BHGI please go to www.bhgi.info or email jchase@fhcrc.org.

About SLACOM
The mission of SLACOM is to improve cancer care and prevention in Latin America and the Caribbean. Our vision for the development of a Latin-American and Caribbean Society of Medical Oncology is of a future where cancer is prevented, detected early and cured or managed successfully for patients all over the region and with standards of global oncology care.
SLACOM, with more than 2.000 members from about 20 countries became the leading resource on cancer in the region and partner for interactions with many other International Organizations.
Currently, there exists in Latin America a diversity of levels in medical oncologist qualifications, countries with limited resources, and a very high incidence of disease. There is a tremendous need to develop consistent standards in cancer education, research, cancer care and information dissemination.
It is the strong conviction of the leaders of SLACOM that the development of a regional Society, comprised of medical oncologists from different countries in the region, has a pivotal role in the education and training of its members, and through them, setting standards of care that would benefit cancer patients in the region.
SLACOM through several agreements with other International Societies (ASCO; ESMO; UICC; ACS; etc.) integrates Latin American oncologists more strongly into the global Community. Particularly the Clinical Trial Institute of SLACOM foster the growth and further development of clinical cancer research in the region putting together a large number of researchers and a wide set of public and private studies.
Cancer care in today’s world is not limited by borders, countries or regions of the world. The fight must be global and should strive toward a coordinated effort with the objective being a similar standard of care for patients in whatever part of the world they reside.
SLACOM is in the best position to meet the needs and challenges faced by oncologists all over Latin America and the Caribbean. We develop programs, tools, and resources specifically tailored to the needs of practicing oncologists in the promotion of high-quality cancer care for all the patients in our region. www.slacom.org
