Partner News: King Abdualziz Unversity in Jeddah launches Chair of Women's Health Empowerment

A new initiative supporting women’s health rights in the Middle East, a Chair of Women’s Health Empowerment, has been announced by King Abdulaziz University (KAU) in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. The program, the first of its kind in the region, has been funded for three years by Saudi businessman Sheikh Mohammed Hussien Al-Amoudi and will be chaired by Dr. Samia Al-Amoudi, head of the Sheikh Mohammed Hussein Al-Amoudi Center of Excellence in Breast Cancer (SMHA-CEBC), a scientific partner in the Breast Health Global Initiative’s (BHGI) global alliance of international organizations.

With a stated mission “to empower women with knowledge of their health rights,” the focus of the chair will include cancer patients’ rights, particularly breast cancer patients; reproductive health and safe motherhood; adolescent sexual and psychological health; and underserved women’s health, including women with physical limitations. Saudi Breast Center and U.S. Cancer Research Institute Expand Partnership to Address Cultural Obstacles to Healthcare in Middle East

Al-Amoudi Center in Jeddah and Seattle-based Breast Health Global Initiative at FHCRC strengthen research ties through qualitative research 

A unique U.S.-Saudi Arabia scientific partnership, that began in 2010 between the Sheikh Mohammed Hussein Al-Amoudi Center of Excellence in Breast Cancer (SMHA-CEBC) at the King Abdulaziz University, in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia and Seattle, Washington, U.S.-based Breast Health Global Initiative (BHGI) at Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center (Hutchinson Center), a pioneer in cancer research and home to three Nobel Lauretes, developed further over the summer, through the vision of Dr. Samia Al-Amoudi, CEO of the SMHA-CEBC, breast cancer survivor and rising global advocate, when she joined the scientific ranks of the Hutchinson Center in Seattle as the first Visiting Scientist, under the auspices of the BHGI.  Full Article>> Right: Dr. Samia Al-Amoudi, BHGI Visiting Scientist, meets with Dr. Larry Corey, President and Director, Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center, August 2011

U.S.-Middle East Partnership for Breast Cancer Awareness and Research

Early Detection & Screening Program: Saudi Arabia Situation Analysis - Riyadh, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, October 21-22, 2009

Organized through ICF International in association with Komen for the Cure, Dr. Anderson visited Riyadh to provide a situation analysis in preparation for the institution of a comprehensive early detection and screening program for Saudi Arabia.  This program is being organized under the direction of Abdullah S. Al-Amro, MD, FRCPC, Chief Executive Officer, King Fahad Medical City (KFMC), Riyadh, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.

Pan Arab Cancer Congress in Cairo, Egypt

BHGI presentation at the Pan Arab Cancer Congress - Cairo, Egypt, May 9, 2009

In his presentation, Dr. Anderson discusses recent advances in breast cancer surgical techniques and the evolution of breast cancer surgical treatments from radical mastectomy to current state of the art breast conservation techniques. He also discusses his work with the Breast Health Global Initiative and its mission to implement and study evidence based, economically feasible, and culturally appropriate guidelines for international cancer control and care.
